The connection between humans and animals is more than just a bond; it is a relationship built on love, loyalty, and resilience. Rescue stories of animals often serve to remind us of the strength and spirit of our four-legged friends. These narratives tug at our heartstrings and show the incredible transformations that can occur when kindness meets need.
In this post, we will highlight just one of our many inspiring rescue stories that illustrate the deep connections formed during the rescue process. These tales serve as powerful reminders of how love can flourish in the most unexpected circumstances.
The Journey of Hope: Rocco’s Transformation
Every rescue story is unique, but some etch themselves into your heart in a way you never forget. Rocco’s story is one of those. It’s a powerful reminder of resilience, the power of love, and what happens when we choose compassion over convenience.
We first saw Rocco at one of the many heart-wrenching livestock auctions we regularly attend—places where fear hangs heavy in the air, where the cries of frightened animals mix with the relentless echo of the auctioneer’s voice. In a back corner of the holding area, barely visible behind a group of larger animals, stood a small, trembling figure. His head hung low, his body gaunt, and his eyes filled with a deep, weary fear. He didn’t want to be touched. He didn’t want to be seen. He was shutting down.

When his turn in the auction ring came, the scene turned unbearable. He was forced out into the open, prodded and pushed into moving under the harsh lights and the shouting crowd. I could see the terror in his every step—he stumbled more than he walked, his body flinching with each poke. My heart shattered. I couldn’t stand by and do nothing, especially not knowing what his fate would be in someone else’s hands.
So I started bidding.
It didn’t take long—there weren’t many interested in this sickly, terrified little soul. Soon, the gavel dropped, and Rocco was ours. But that was just the beginning.
Bringing Rocco home was a challenge in itself. He was so scared of people that simply getting him into the trailer was a delicate, painstaking process. Every movement, every sound sent him further into a panic. But eventually, we got him safely to the sanctuary.

Within 24 hours of arriving, we had our veterinarian out to evaluate him. The diagnosis:
shipping fever—a serious respiratory infection similar to pneumonia in horses. It was no wonder he was so weak. The following days were harrowing. Rocco stopped eating. He stopped drinking. His cough was relentless, and his spirit was clearly broken. Every time I entered the barn, I found him tucked tightly into the corner, trying to make himself as small as possible, his head nearly touching the ground in fear.
He didn’t know he was safe yet.
But we never stopped showing up for him.
We offered him quiet company, soothing words, fresh hay, and warm mash. Slowly—so slowly—something began to shift. After a few days, he began nibbling at his food. Then a little more. Then a little more. His cough subsided. His eyes began to brighten. And little by little, he started to emerge from the shell he had built to protect himself from the cruelty of his past.
Physically, Rocco recovered. But emotionally, the journey had just begun.

Over the following weeks and months, we worked side by side to rebuild what had been shattered—his trust in humans. We didn’t rush him. We let him come to us. And eventually, he did. A little nuzzle here. A gentle breath on the palm of a hand there. And then—one day—a joyful gallop, a head tossed in the wind.
The real Rocco had arrived.
Now, Rocco is a completely different donkey. He spends his days grazing peacefully in the pasture with his best friend, Lola. The two are inseparable—grooming each other, playing in the sunshine, and enjoying the serenity of sanctuary life. But no matter how far he roams, Rocco never misses his daily visit to the fence line for his carrot—and his cuddle.
His transformation is nothing short of remarkable.
Rocco’s journey is a testament to what can happen when animals are given the care, patience, and love they so deeply deserve. It’s a story of hope. Of healing. Of a life reclaimed.
And at Hope and Hooves Rescue & Sanctuary, it’s exactly why we do what we do.
